I’ve never been a huge football fan.  I’m still not.  But, I am married to a Jersey boy, who happens to be huge Giants fan.  So, because I never really followed football before Tock, I slowly became a Giants fan after we were married (there might have been something about ‘Bleeding Blue’ in our vows but I’d have to watch our wedding video to be certain).

Last month when the Giants defeated the 49ers, and the Patriots defeated the Ravens (totally impressed I remembered the teams), life became a little stressful over here.  First (appropriate) words out of Tock’s mouth were, “We are not watching the Super Bowl with any (expletive) Patriots fans.  Don’t even talk about the Super Bowl with any (expletive) Patriots fans.”  Fair enough.  As Sunday’s game approached, his nerves heightened, the stress level soared and I started to wonder if  the reason he was so emotional was because he was secretly going to be playing in the Super Bowl.  I also wondered if I should buy some adult diapers after he declared ‘he’s shitting himself just thinking about the game.’

Oliver wore his NY Giants shirt to school on Friday and I’ll sheepishly admit that I tried to convince him otherwise.  My mama bear anxiety instincts were telling me that a big 5th grader would knock him to the ground for not being a Pat’s fan.  I told him that maybe he should just wear a regular shirt so he didn’t upset anyone.  “I don’t care.  I’m wearing this shirt.”  (He is awesome, and I’m a big baby for always being so afraid that something bad is going to happen.).

Game time.  Here’s our play by play.  Tock’s nervous energy wears off on me and I suddenly can’t sit still.  He allows me to invite friends over because they are rooting against the Patriots, but tells me they must leave at half time because, “I can’t have kids running around here, I’m going to be dropping F-Bombs and I need to concentrate on the game.”  At first I’m embarrassed that I have to give our friends a departure time, but as the game goes on, I’m embarrassed that I invited them over at all.  Tock is a mess.  Literally.  He sits, he stands.  He screams and shouts at the tv, at the players, at the refs.  When I ask him questions he looks like he wants to poke me in the eyeballs.  I stop talking.  I start to panic too.  As the final minutes tick away, a friend texts me the following message: “Tell Tock that the Giants absolutely deserve to win.  Congratulations.”  I read him the message.  His response is filled with fury: “PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN.  DO NOT COMMUNICATE WITH HER.  THE GAME ISN’T OVER!” and veins pop out of his neck and his eyes bulge out and I suddenly wish I had bought the adult diapers.  For me.

Needless to say Tock was definitely not psyched when I pulled my camera out to capture him during the final seconds of the game.  But *this* was a moment I wanted to remember.  Because, truth be told, our allegiance is not really with the Giants after all, it’s {always} with him.

Danielle, it took me three timed to read this blog because I was laughing so hard!!!! Thank God for your sake that the Giants won!!!’n

So funny! I could just picture it all. 🙂 I was the only one at my Super Bowl party and everytime I yelled or jumped up, the dog and bird thought someone was coming in to get me, so it was “hell’s a poppin'” a couple of times.!

oh yes i get it ! if the ravend couldnt be there we were glad to have the GIANTS win—-WHAT A GAME!
great blog. xoxoxxo

What is it with football fans? Ed’s team was out (49ers) and he was still a TOTAL stress case. Not to mention I missed most of the game (my team was playing) because he refused to be anywhere but standing in front of t.v., good times.

Very much enjoyed your pictures and commentary. Great sequence.

I feel so pleased to have gracefully aged on at least this one issue. I was at a super bowl party and didn’t turn in the direction of the t.v. once. The men all sat around grunting and goaning while the ladies, no longer feeling compelled to pretend to be interested and ask pointed questions, were free to talk about everything but the game. No nerves, no disappointment. We had a wonderful time and still got to do all the eating and drinking the men did.

Congrats to Gmen! Nice win, impressive team, vy talented — absolutely deserved to win. Great pix, Danielle – -they capture it. I was surprised Tock was able to sit. When I watch Bruins playoff games I have to stand throughout — not able to sit down at all.

stop at week 5 as it will be impossible to post a funnier report on a more important subject for the balance of the year.

Thank God you continued doing your blog is all that I can say. this was so fun to read and the pix were great. I won’t show this to Blair V (an unhappy fan)

If you multiply Tock’s behavior by 3, you have captured what it was like for me when all the Mac men were in residence as they were growing up. Now on to Devils hockey but I think we part company with Tock here. Great blog.

Danielle, you are not only warm and loving, but you are also hilarious.
I so wish I had better appreciated that part of you as you (and I) were growing up.
I love you for who you are and who you have become.

Oh my goodness, I am rolling laughing at your story. We are big Pats fans down here, so I am a little bitter, but boy do I know what you went through!!!

I’m relieved that there was no mention of me prematurely talking trash! Love the photos!
