Dizzy’s here!  Dizzy’s here!!!!

Dizzy, our elf on the shelf, finally made an appearance this morning.  He was perched high on our bookshelf, where no little limbs (Lila) could reach him.  The kids were ecstatic!!  And with that, our Christmas season had officially begun.  I know that my kids could eventually read this blog (especially if I turn it into a coffee table book so we will always have our 52 weeks to look back on), so I have to choose my words carefully for this post.

Dizzy is pretty amazing.  He holds this power over my kids that I can’t attain.  For weeks the kids have been possessed by a force I can’t quite discipline correctly–until yesterday when they spotted him, and everything changed.  Dizzy performed an exorcism! Well, not really, but their belief in all things Christmas suddenly became more important then who kicked whom, and who destroyed the playroom (the answer is, of course, Lila).  Abby picked up a puzzle and declared to Tock, “Daddy! I cleaned up the puzzle, even though I didn’t take it out and the whole time I was staring at Dizzy and he was watching me so now he can go tell Santa that I’m being good!”

Dizzy is my little helper.  For the month of December, I’m allowed (DO NOT tell me otherwise, I’m serious) to threaten my kids on Dizzy’s behalf.  Okay, that sounds a little harsh, and I don’t threaten them all the time, but anyone who has 3 kids ages 3, 6, and 9- scratch that- anyone who has any kids at all, knows how important these little elves are.  Last year Abby asked me why Dizzy looked so “plastic.”  I carefully explained that the elf we are seeing is not actually an elf, but a disguise, and that Dizzy was hiding inside of that costume which is why we’re never to touch him.  Crisis averted.  For now.

The bigger questions are right around the corner, I just know it.  We’ve talked about the fact that there will always be people who don’t believe in the same things that we do, but it doesn’t mean we have to let go.   And for those of you who have children who are asking those questions now, read this and I promise it will make you feel better about how on earth you’re supposed to answer everything truthfully, while still maintaining the magic of Christmas.

Let the holiday season begin! Dizzy’s here!!
