The cure for anything is salt water- sweat, tears, or the sea. – Isak Dinesen

The end of summer on the Cape always seems to sneak up on us. Last summer I was deep into my Project 365, so I was shooting my family every single day, but this summer was different. Actually, everything about this summer was different, and I don’t really have any pictures to prove it (except for a few iphone pictures below). For me, this summer was basically a series of fragments… a combination of traditions and unchecked boxes on our summer bucket list that we never actually made. Yesterday marked the last official day of summer, though I felt like summer ended forever ago.

Even still, I know we savored our time on New Silver.

We went to the beach (a lot). We got too tan immediately. We rode our bikes down the hill to the beach, little legs pedaling so quickly that chains came flying off numerous times.

We spent $10,000 at the Tea Room on slushies and games. We learned to just hand money over to Sam when he would come up to us and say “hey, you got any money for me?” We gave up on trying to get our (Tea Room) feet clean. We showered outside..even when it rained. Sometimes we didn’t shower at all.

We collected heart shaped rocks and sea glass, and maybe got a little competitive about it. We spent time with family and reconnected with summer sisters. We laughed loud and often. We left a thousand unfinished conversations floating in the air over our beach chairs.

We raced down to the last rock of the jetty and watched as the Optis sailed in, our hands waving proudly as we saw the familiar faces of our friends. We hopped aboard the Doc to Dock and looked over the port side for sharks as we navigated the rocky paths to our favorite island beaches (okay fine, I was the only one looking for sharks). We got kicked off islands and discovered new ones.

We breathed in deeply and purposefully those last few days to fill our lungs with the salty air that we hoped would carry us through another winter. We lived life the New Silver way and we are grateful for every second of it.
